These can be beneficial: without our neighbourhood WhatsApp group, which brought together neighbours who had never met before and which this week was used to arrange a tree-planting petition, dump a dog's car seat, and make a request for a pair of handcuffs (for a school play, I promise), I would now be lost. However, they can also be detrimental, particularly if they are intransigent about using Zoom for meetings. "I'll send you a link to Zoom." No! Why is making a phone call bad? or a face-to-face meeting? Stop acting so strange.
Staged, starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant, started out as a locked Zoom project. However, look at where we are now: series three in 2023. Tennant has at least changed his location; in the first episode, it is shown that he is filming a cream cheese commercial in Japan, while Sheen is still stranded in front of that fireplace in south Wales.
The chemistry hasn't really changed either: Sheen is jaded, Tennant is hyperactive and mildly unpleasant, and both have big egos. Watching them push each other's buttons is still entertaining. "Wait a minute, did you dye your hair?" Sheen is asked, and despite the fact that his hair now appears suspiciously dark, he twitches and denies it. The actors enjoy making fun of themselves. Sheen (who is so Welsh that last week he told the Telegraph he finds it hard to accept non-Welsh actors playing Welsh characters) bemoans the fact that people have asked him to produce a rendition of Under Milk Wood and claims that they can't swing an f---ing cat for them.
Actually, Simon Evans, who plays the director who initially brought these two together but then made the stupid decision to pursue other projects, is the best comedy performer in episode one. He returns crawling in the hopes of securing Sheen and Tennant for another series because it turns out that no one wanted any of his projects that did not involve them. They initially reject him, but he cunningly seduces them.
This review now faces a challenge. I can't say what occurs at the end of episode two since doing so would be a major spoiler, but it will cause you to reconsider everything you've just witnessed. You will either think this is a brilliant meta-move and wish they had stopped at series two, or you will find it too smart by half. I belong to the latter group.
