Dutch Government Collapses

Dutch Government Collapses

After failing to achieve an agreement on immigration restrictions, the Dutch government disintegrated on Friday. This will cause new elections to be held in the autumn.

When two of the four parties in Prime Minister Mark Rutte's coalition administration refused to endorse his conservative VVD party's call to restrict the number of asylum seekers entering the Netherlands, a crisis resulted.

It is well known that the coalition's members hold different views on immigration. Sadly, we now have to draw the conclusion that these divisions are now insurmountable. Therefore, I will present the king with the resignation of the entire cabinet, Rutte stated during a broadcast press conference.

When Rutte demanded backing for a plan to ban the entry of children of war refugees who are already in the Netherlands and to require families to wait at least two years before being reunited, tensions reached a peak this week.

The newest idea caused a deadlock because it was too extreme for the liberal D66 and the tiny Christian Union.

Rutte's coalition will continue in office as a caretaker administration until fresh elections are held, which often takes months in the shattered Dutch political system.

Elections will not take place before the middle of November, according to news agency ANP, which cited the national elections body.

The Netherlands already has one of the strictest immigration laws in Europe, but under pressure from right-wing groups, Rutte had been looking for months for measures to further cut back on the number of people applying for asylum.

The government has predicted that asylum applications in the Netherlands could rise to above 70,000 this year, surpassing the previous high of 2015. Last year, asylum applications increased by a third to over 46,000.

This will put more burden on the nation's asylum camps, where hundreds of refugees at a time were made to sleep in the open without access to drinking water, sanitary facilities, or medical care for months last year.

After Medecins sans Frontieres sent a team to the Netherlands for the first time ever to help with refugees' medical requirements at the centre for processing asylum requests, Rutte admitted last year that he was "ashamed" of the issues.

He pledged to make the facilities better, primarily by lowering the flow of refugees into the Netherlands. However, he was unable to get the support of coalition allies who thought his measures went too far.

After Hungary's Viktor Orban, Rutte, 56, has served as the head of state for the Netherlands the longest. At the upcoming elections, he is anticipated to continue leading his VVD party.

Since becoming prime minister in October 2010, Rutte has served in four successive administrations, the most recent of which took office in January 2022.

Has the Dutch government crumbled?

On Friday, the Dutch government of Prime Minister Mark Rutte abruptly disintegrated due to disagreements over immigration policy.

The Dutch government has vanished?

Since 1588, The Hague has served as the Netherlands' capital. The Netherlands' States General are located in the Binnenhof.

What caused the Dutch government to fall?

The Dutch four-party coalition government disintegrated after 18 months in office due to acrimonious disagreements over immigration policy. The centre-left D66 and Christian Union parties opposed the stronger policies that were sought by the CDA and the Prime Minister's VVD party.
