The location of the storm's centre will determine how much rain Southern California gets. Deserts and mountainous regions will probably take the brunt of the storm because the eastern side is usually the strongest.

Rain will begin to fall heavily across the area beginning Sunday night and continuing into Monday morning. This storm system may bring rains of up to seven inches to some places.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Tardy, some inland desert locations might receive their whole year's worth of precipitation in as little as 48 hours.

As of Friday morning, the region was expected to receive the following amount of rain:

• Coastal areas: 2-2.5 inches
• Valleys: 2.5-3 inches
• Mountains: 4-8 inches
• Low deserts: 4-6 inches

Rough surf will also be an issue along local beaches, which could lead to beach erosion.

We hope you have a rain poncho on hand. The tropical storm that developed off the coast of Mexico has been upgraded to Hurricane Hilary, according to the National Weather Service, although residents of San Diego won't see any effects until later this weekend.

Hilary began to take shape on Wednesday and was upgraded to a Category 4 storm last night. Tomorrow, it's anticipated to reach the Baja California peninsula with less ferocity. It should continue to lose strength as it heads north. It may still be considered a tropical storm by the time it approaches San Diego .

Regional Weather Effects

Hilary is predicted to bring wind and showers to San Diego County starting tomorrow tonight, with the heaviest rain falling Sunday into Monday.

• The National Weather Service predicted Wednesday that the areas east of San Diego County would get the most rainfall, with up to 7 inches possible in Borrego Springs, Julian, and Mount Laguna.
• Less rain will fall in coastal areas, but 1.5 inches of rain are predicted for downtown San Diego.
• From Saturday to Monday, there is a flash flood warning in place, with the easternmost regions of San Diego county seeing the greatest risk. The county has sandbag suppliers and resources to help residents prepare for flooding.
• Maximum gusts could surpass 50 mph early on Monday as wind speeds are predicted to climb on Sunday and peak that evening into Monday morning. Both days are predicted to have high surf along the shore.

On the forecast cone of the National Hurricane Centre, current predictions are based. Although it allows for more variation for events occurring later, this shows the likely path of the storm's centre. Be aware of alerts as predictions may alter before the storm hits San Diego.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for Southern California as "large and powerful" Hurricane Hilary prepares to make landfall in Mexico and the area in the next 48 hours.

According to the National Hurricane Centre, Hilary is predicted to bring heavy rain and the possibility of flash flooding from the Baja California peninsula all the way up to Nevada. The watch is said to be unprecedented for the area.

With maximum sustained winds of 145 mph as of Friday, the hurricane was situated about 360 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Greg Postel of the Weather Channel told CBS News that it is unusual — almost unheard of in the contemporary record — for a tropical system to go through Southern California.

Before they were given names, the last time a tropical storm made landfall in California was in 1939, although since then the state has had sub-tropical storms. In that storm, 45 individuals perished, the majority of whom drowned.

The hurricane is anticipated to make landfall in Baja Mexico this weekend before waning and making landfall in Southern California as a tropical storm on Sunday night.

"At this time, it appears that we will still have a tropical storm when it moves into Southern California, but it will be weakening pretty quickly," said National Weather Service meteorologist Brandt Maxwell.
