Nothing Compares 2 U

Nothing Compares 2 U

The Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O'Connor passed away on Wednesday at the age of 56, according to her family. We're bringing back a 2021 episode of 60 Songs That Explain the '90s that examined her career and how she turned the Prince song "Nothing Compares 2 U" into a timeless classic as a mark of respect. An expanded section of the episode's script is provided below. You can hear the whole episode here

This narrative focuses on Sinéad O'Connor's song "Nothing Compares 2 U." Written by Prince. She seized it. Her song is it. But it came at a high price for her.

You undoubtedly already know that Prince wrote a tonne of songs. and gave away an absurd amount. And it turns out that female singers simply make some of those tunes sound better. The Bangles performing "Manic Monday." Chaka Khan performing "I Feel for You." When Sheila E. performs "The Glamorous Life." You seek out the reality? Prince's rendition of "When You Were Mine" is inferior to Cyndi Lauper's rendition of the song. That's accurate. What are you going to do in response? I don't use Twitter (at least not that you're aware of). You're not sure where to look for me. Cyndi Lauper didn't alter the song's meaning; rather, she captured its gorgeous, colourful anguish in its purest form.

The song "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor from her second album, 1990's I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, is different. Regardless of how amicable the first business deal was—the method by which Prince granted her permission to record and disseminate his song—forget all that. It's an aggressive takeover. The very essence of this song is Sinéad. She modifies the song's underlying meaning. This song is hers. She appropriates the music. Just think about that. She needed to be courageous and great to accomplish that. If Sinéad O'Connor said, "I'm gonna steal a song from Prince," Nicolas Cage would have said, "I'm gonna steal the Declaration of Independence."

But she did exactly that.

Who is this individual? What is she seeking? What does she not desire? What are we expecting from her? Sinéad O'Connor released her autobiography, Rememberings, in June 2021. It's hard. In 1966, she was born in Glenageary, Ireland. the third child out of four. She shared time with her father, who was initially given custody of the kids, and her mother, who according to Sinéad was physically and mentally abusive, after her parents divorced when she was nine years old.Sinéad makes several references to the fact that she pretended her hockey stick was misplaced when she returned from summer school because she didn't want her mother to hit her with it. Sinéad claims that her mother would instead beat her with a carpet sweeper pole while forcing her to repeatedly declare, "I am nothing." That concludes the details. When Sinéad was 18 years old, her mother passed away in a vehicle accident, just before she signed her first record deal. I only say that because it might help to understand Sinéad O'Connor's ability to sing with equal parts vulnerability and ferocity, as well as the tenacious confidence she brings to every song she's ever performed.
